Back Up Linux Server  09.10.08

I leased a dedicated Linux server for the use of my developer, who has turned out to be a flake; he has stopped doing work and won’t return my calls or emails.

Before I pull the plug on this dedicated server, I would like to create a complete backup image of the scripts and code that were created by the developer (I’m not optimistic, but still hopeful that a new developer might find the code useful or educational.) Unfortunately, I am not familiar with Linux, and the developer seems to have scattered code across a number of different directories. So basically, I want a complete backup of the server.

Ideally, the backup should include at least the STRUCTURE of the MySQL database (but I don’t need the data in the database). However, I do not have (and my developer claims to have forgotten) the MySQL password.

I have root access to the server. What I need as an end-product is a compressed backup file in a standard format (probably gz) that a future developer will be able to read.

(1) I do not know what script languages or coding styles my programmer used. It was supposed to be PHP but he has used other stuff.

(2) The server does not have cpanel. It is a dedicated server at ThePlanet.com.

If you do not know how to make a backup under these circumstances, do not bid on the project.
