I am not a programmer so I do not know which programming languages are needed for this… please do not confuse me with a load of technobabble
I have no idea what languages were used or should be used in this project.

Look at the existing program and make sure you can clone it with improvements
Please download the existing version and look at it.

We Need To Upgrade, Improve And Update The Existing Directory Reader Program.
Think of this as a digital phone book on the users computer in which people can look up a lawyers address and phone etc
A couple times a year we issue a new version of the program with an updated database
Records are NOT editable, changeable or deletable in the program.
Only CanLaw can change the database, by replacing it entirely and issuing a new version.

This is a program which users buy, download to their computer and run on their own computers.
They have to obtain an activation key to use the program after two or three uses…
The activation key requires them to first submit a registry number which is in the register screen on their copy
It is designed so that the registration key is linked to the machine id number of each users computer and will only run one copy on one computer
If people want to use it on other machines, they must buy new copies.
It they want a newer version they must buy a new copy. No free upgrades.

The database used by the program resides on the users computer, not our servers
Somehow some programmers think that this database would reside on our web site and use Mysql. That is wrong and shows a lack of understanding of the project

The db has about 68,000 records in the mbx file. You will get a couple free views. I will supply free password etc to the successful bidder only.
It is not very secure as any competent programmer seems to be able to get into it and get the db password.

LOOK IT OVER AND SEE HOW IT RUNS NOW BEFORE YOU POST BIDS OR PMB MESSAGES:
Users can search the db. They currently get 50 records at a time from a search. They cannot copy multiple records.
They can copy and paste one record at a time from the upper right hand corner box.
It is currently designed with security features so it operates ONLY on one computer
It also is supposed to prevent users from downloading newer versions and overwriting the old with a new one without paying.

WE WANT THE PROGRAMMER TO DO THIS: (and any needed changes that arise during the updating)

UpdatE the reader program with improvements
1 in database security to keep unauthorized users out of the db
2 Create an admin panel so I can replace the entire database from time to time.
3 and update the version numbers and any other needed changes

But the basic existing program can remain pretty much as is

Only I will have access to make any changes to the db and it will only be the entire db at a time,
We will never want to edit any given individual record and no one else will be permitted to make any changes ever.

START WITH THE LAWYERS VERSION OF THE PROGRAM
I want to replace the current verions with a new version doing the same things but more secure and with the ability for me to easily replace/update the database when I want to.

The lawyers version is set up to operate as a national edition where a user can access all the records and as 5 regional editions which restricts users to records in the different regions,
but all versions use the same program and db

THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT EDITIONS OF THIS PROGRAM
One a directory of lawyers, one is a directory of process servers and the third is a directory of Trustees
Apart from the db and some name changes, they are the same program
The only difference is in the database. Each edition has a different database but the dbs have exactly the same fields and types of information
Each edition also has a different name and slightly different graphics
I will supply replacement graphics when the job needs them.

I just do not know how to make this project clearer.
